Copying yourself

Copying yourself

"To copy yourself is pathetic!"  Pablo Picasso

The children's picture book Just Behave, Pablo Picasso! caught me by surprise last night. On so many levels, I found myself thinking about the focus of the book: Picasso's transition into Cubism.

Imagine pitching a children's picture book about the birth of Cubism. It works. The story, the whole truth behind the matter, is about pushing ourselves to grow. To be open to the world around us.

It reminds me to teach the kids I have in front of me today--not to recycle lessons from last year's students. To get to know the kids I have now. To be receptive and responsive to their needs. To make decisions everyday in the moment. To create a community in the classroom that is more holistic and less prescriptive.
